The RV city water inlet on the outside of the RV makes it possible to hook up to an outside source, such as a campground or residential faucet using a hose, and have pressurized water running on the inside. To hook up to the RV city water inlet you must first remove the outside cap and get a hose that is designed for drinking water. A specialized RV drinking water hose is drinking water safe and made of materials approved by the National Sanitation Association, which contains no toxins rubber or lead. Attach the hose to the unit directly or you can use an elbow connector to make it easier to get connected and disconnected to the RV city water inlet. Once connected to the RV city water inlet, pressurized water will come into your unit bypassing the water pump. This provides pressurized water to faucets, showers and toilets. On newer models with an enclosed service center, you can also fill the freshwater tank by switching the valve inside near the tank.

When putting solids into the toilet, flush and then fill the toilet bowl twice 2 times to the top with water and flush. The force of these 2 flushes will push all the solids out of the black water tank into the parks sewer line, stopping any vapors going up the tank vent. As mentioned above, the toilet must be filled completely twice with water and flushed.
Along with the weight and volume of water this action will push the solids and fumes out and down through the RV Parks sewer system. Depending on the make and model of your RV toilet, it may hold from 3 to 6 gallons of water when filled. This volume and weight along with the force of gravity is what cleans out your black water tank. There are 3 primary ways you may use to fill your RV toilet bowl with water.
Fill a bucket from your sink and pour the water into the bowl. This process is cumbersome and takes time to do. Depress the RV toilet flush pedal part way down until water enters the bowl and the toilet bottom opening has yet to open.

At some point, you are going to have to get down to some nasty business and dump those black and grey water holding tanks. What you are about to do deals with gross grey water from your shower and sinks, and raw sewage from your RV toilet. This makes sense, right? If you take that cap off with the valves open, you are in for a surprise.
Connect RV sewer hose. Most RV sewer hoses have bayonet-style fittings and generally make a tight seal. Make sure to use an elbow not yours, a fitting that fits snug and deep into the dump station opening. You may need to use a soft sewer gasket depending on the dump station and location. This is an important step. Depending on how full your tanks are, you can expect there to be a good pressure surge as sewage enters the hose and makes its way to the dump station.

Drain the tank by pulling on the handle. Take a sponge and bucket to soak up the remainder of water left in the tank. If needed, use some paper towels to finish the job. Now that the tank is empty, it’s time to address the bowl. Since there’s still water left in the trap, take an ordinary plunger and press it once or twice as you would with a clogged toilet.
This will force all the water out of the trap making the old toilet ready for removal.

Please be guided accordingly. This article was first drafted in , but after review is absolutely as “current” today as it was when first written. It is likely the most comprehensive review of pre-delivery inspections for taking delivery of any RV, whether new or used, and whether from the factory, a dealer, or through private sale. I realize that most factories put some miles on each coach during the quality control activity, but I want to drive the rest.
I worked as a delivery driver for a while and watched how other delivery drivers work. Most are very good drivers and very responsible with the products, but others are not. I know of a situation where a delivery driver jumped into a new luxury coach, started the generator, turned on both air conditioners, turned the stereo up to db ear damage level and tore out of the lot. He did not hear the new technology awning extend, when it should have stayed in.
This happened because of the windmill type sensor said the there was a 30 mph wind and the factory had wired the controls in reverse. So the automatic controls extended the awning instead of retracting it. The result was that the extended awning took out at least 5 traffic signs and the wood posts that held them. The awning was destroyed and the side of the coach was badly damaged before he got one mile away.
