Post by martin1 on Dec 2, From what I’ve heard that the serial number data for Edison has been largely thrown to the wind. That doesn’t mean it may not show up some day, but little of that seems to remain at the Edison site. One great exception is a listing for serial numbers of early Home models. I’ve heard that other models’ information might be in private hands, but nobody has come forth publicly, so far. I know that some collectors keep track of serial numbers and data on various models and reproducers. Steve Medved has some really stellar observations about the various reproducer types. I personally, have been keeping track of Edison Standard data for the past two years and have been trying to correlate the serial numbers with model and feature changes. Right now, my list is up to about machines. In the case of Standards, I’m pretty sure that the serial number was acquired as each machine was assembled starting with “1” – a more or less chronological sequence.

The patent numbers you will find on the triangular plate on the timing cover and in period brochures refer to several Triumph features by now standard across the range. The T21 was designed from the outset as a machine incorporating for then; modern features and aimed to attract new buyers looking for clean inexpensive transport. The design brief was for a clean, high performance, cc roadster and the components and specifications applied reflect this. A bolted on sub frame supports the seat and rear suspension while additional welded on brackets are provided for other components.
The headset and engine bridge support are malleable-iron castings.
A guide to locating and decoding the correct stamped frame numbers on a classic Matchless and AJS motorcycles for verification with your vehicles log book.
II SERIAL NUMBERS Major mechanical units, the body, and the car as a whole all have unique serial numbers that were assigned by the factory to identify them so that particular design modifications could be listed in parts catalogues as applying to particular ranges of units and to satisfy legal obligations. The locations of the individual unit serial numbers are designated in the illustrations given below. Whenever possible in this catalogue, we use commission numbers to document change points, as this number is easily found on most state registration cards.
However, engine numbers are used for engine parts, gearbox numbers for gearbox parts, rear axle numbers for differential parts, and body numbers are also used occasionally. The locations of plates may vary for overseas models. Commission numbers for carburettor models prior to the model year are prefixed with the letters CC. Beginning with the model year, the numbers were prefixed with the letters CF.

The most interesting aspect of what might be called the transgender triumph is the extent to which transwomen have managed to invade and occupy the niche called “women” — without many.
Frank Bowden, a successful lawyer and convert to cycling, bought the firm in and in December founded The Raleigh Cycle Company as a limited liability private company. In , Sturmey-Archer gears were added to the product range. Six years later, Bowden bought back Raleigh, which was to remain in family hands for the next quarter century. By the early s, Raleigh was a world leader, capable of producing annually , cycles, , hub gears 15, motorcycles and 50, motorcycle gearboxes.
Raleigh survived the Great Depression well. It acquired Humber cycles in and the following year started producing a three-wheeler car. By , its production of bicycles had grown to nearly , units per annum and the company had stopped making motorcycles and cars. During the Second World War , Raleigh concentrated on munitions work. The name of its budget range, launched in as Gazelle, was changed to Robin Hood, and Raleigh acquired Rudge-Whitworth.
By , it had reached about , , the majority of which was exported. But between and , as increasingly prosperous consumers abandoned the cycle in favour of the car, cycle sales in the UK halved.

It has also been reprinted in Dutch and appeared in an article there. As Registrar, I received about two questions a week regarding serial numbers: Is my engine original? I have only a partial chassis number, how can I determine the proper number?
What does it mean? If you ever wondered why people write ‘matching numbers’ on their adverts when they are selling a bike? Here is the reason why What is all this ‘matching numbers’ one sees in advertising for things like motorcycles for sale or to be auctioned? It could mean the numbers match those displayed on the registration document. The registration number should match the number shown in the registration document.
And you are going to have big troubles if they don’t. They should always be checked at point of sale – do the numbers match? The frame number is just as important and may land you in even deeper distress, always check that the engine and frame number shown in the registration document matches that on the motorcycle you are interested in buying – it is worth checking it even on a new motorcycles and especially on older ones.
So why is ‘matching numbers’ mentioned in the advertisement? It is, after all to be expected that the numbers do match. Perhaps the numbers do not match those on the registration Certificate or the computer registration and notified the Authorities.

The T20 Tiger Cub brief was clear and straightforward. It was to be a small bike with BIG pretensions. Or, if you prefer, BIG aspirations. A bike that filled a gap at the low end of the range. The T20 Cub was also intended as an antidote to the fog of British two-strokes smoking up British streets.
Triumph supremo Edward Turner (pictured above aboard a Terrier), typically, oversaw the project and wanted to kick BSA’s Bantam into touch. But it was Turner’s right hand man (and “pencil”), Jack Wickes, who translated the raw engineering numbers into a motorcycle that people actually wanted to swing a .
Some of the mid ‘s straight gauge frames had serial numbers starting with a single letter which was towards the end of the alphabet. This new system applied to the high-end i. Reynolds frames, and involved the placing of a character at the beginning of the serial number. The character began at the start of the alphabet, and indicated year of manufacture. Detail about the numerals that follow the alphabet are sketchy, and are presumably sequential serial numbers of some kind.

On my Matchless G3LS this is stamped into the top of the front down-tube. I initially, like many other people, mistook it to be the frame number. Actually it is just a casting or part number identifier from when the frame was made and hence is identical on many Matchless and AJS bikes, so beware! This is not your frame number! The number shown in the picture is stamped onto the frame of my Matchless G3LS on the front down-tube, just in front of tank next to the top engine bracket.
The circular loop cast into the frame on the left is the front side-car mounting. It is definitely not the frame number! On some bikes, this part number is apparently raised rather than stamped which would mean it was cast into the frame and so must be the same on every frame from the batch as they will all have come out of the same mould. On my bike though the numbers are definitely stamped indented into the metal, but either way they are not unique identifiers.
The arrow in the figure on the right shows roughly where you should be looking. Standing on the right side of the bike as viewed from the seated position , look up under the saddle to the back-end of the top horizontal tube just in front of where this joins the down-tube and the seat bolts into place. The frame number revealed! If your frame is rusty, dirty or has been repainted it may actually be pretty impossible to read the numbers clearly from this angle.
The photo on the left shows the frame number stampings on my Matchless.
